John Wanamaker & Co was one of the first department stores in the USA. Founded by John Wanamaker in Philadelphia in 1861, the Grand Depot store showcased a multitude of goods, furnishings and men's clothing. Although several years later it expanded to include women's clothing. It even manufactured some of its own clothing lines directly at the facility.

A marketing pioneer, Wanamaker introduced the “Money Back Guarantee” and was also the originator of the “White Sale” He was also one of the first store owners to clearly mark the price on the item itself.

In 1902 the store was replaced by an extravagant new Wanamaker’s store complete with nine floors of retail space. The store's decor was lavish and expensive and so were the products that it sold. After his death, family members continued to run the business which eventually expanded to sixteen locations.

The Wanamaker name was synonymous with quality and showcased many high-end goods and designer labels from all over the world. However, the rise of budget retail department stores, eventually saw its demise as it couldn't compete with the lower prices of these retailers.  In 1978,  Wanamaker was sold to Carter Hawley Hale stores. Since that time the Philadelphia flagship store has changed names several times, and is now Macy’s.

The other side of one of the giants of the Victorian era.
Format: Paperback
Thomas Hardy is my favorite novelist who has ever lived. I preface the review of this poetry anthology - which includes every one of the 900+ poems he wrote throughout his life, from the 1860s to just before his death in 1928 - in this way because I’m a bit biased. Hardy’s poetry is technically satisfying and nearly as moving as his novels, and you can tell that the same precision he brought to prose is on full display in his verse. I’m working my way through every single poem in this collection, and thus far my favorites are “The Convergence of the Twain” and “After the Last Breath.” There are other poets whose works I like better (Dickinson, Yeats, Wordsworth, and Whitman come to mind), but as an amateur Hardy scholar, reading this collection is positively invaluable to understand the full depth of his genius, and as always Wordsworth Classics delivers in terms of a quality paperback that should withstand years of enjoyment. I own many of their releases and have yet to find one that even slightly disappoints.

I was happy to discover Merwin's poetry.
Format: Paperback
Great collection of some of Merwin's early poetry. There's a mystical mysterious feel too a lot of his writing, which I like.
